"Vesuvius" is a doc designation since 1983 and includes all the Vesuvius municipalities. Grotta del Sole buys from trusted partners the grapes for the production of Lacryma Christi in vineyards aligned at the base of the Vesuvius up to 600 mt of altitude. The white wine is made from Coda di Volpe grape (locally known as ‘caprettone' to distinguish it from the Beneventan Coda di Volpe), and the red is a piedirosso. This is certainly one of the most prestigious doc designation areas of Campania, an area where we have decided to invest in the coming years to further improve the wines produced to date. What's more, we are the only ones in Campania using Coda di Volpe grape to make a Lacryma Christi sweet sparkling wine using the charmat method. The soil here is volcanic so the upper layer is made up of pulverized lava, giving some of the vineyards a truly picturesque black surface.
